Hit by a Bus

Well not really but that is how I am feeling today after surgery. Was just a Lap Scop to remove my gallbladder, ah that pain is gone but my mid-section is feeling it. So today is a day of rest an hopefully I can get back to class tomorrow although the doctors want me resting for a week, can’t see that happening anytime fast unless I can’t move at all.

Right so I’m going to use this category for little tips as well on photography and anything else that might come up on occasion. Now a lot of people call themselves photographer but use photoshop too heavily alter the image, sorry guys you’re not a photographer, you are a digital artist, photoshop has more tools than a darkroom and unless you’re only repeating what you do there then it’s not true photography. I prefer not too use it myself unless I have to for exposure, dodging and burning, things I can do in the darkroom easily. This is not too say that photoshop does not have a place, it does, I have used it to create several digital images that would be impossible to photograph easily, possibly is a big production or completely staged but other than time and money this is not always possible to do so that’s where photoshop comes into its own element, perfect for those type of jobs.

Right most people seem to want too do double exposures and think they can’t in camera, well there is plenty of software out there than you can use in camera, smart phones are still cameras, make the most of them as they are with you all the time. However you can do it in older digital cameras as well, its just a time trick and one that has to be practiced a few times to get it right, long exposure times are the way to do it but so are lens covers especially the ones wedding photographers use to use, it’s a half cap that can rotate and enable two shots on one piece of film or in this case frame. Timing here is important no more than 30 sec for the first half and often the other side is the hardest to get right as it can often blow out the other side, hence why the half lens cap is good as it will not over expose the already taken image.

I’m not going to show you how to do this, it is something you must experiment on by yourself so that you better understand how the sensor in your camera works and how you can take advantage of it, so get out there and like Nike said ‘just do it’.

Right I’m gonna add a picture I took when I  was starting out with the digital camera, remember this is not photoshop at all the image is exactly it, taken at the point of closing shutter with nothing touched afterwards, all you non believers out there (photoshop critics) please refrain, I have the meta data and can easily replicate the same results anytime in front of anyone, so just because you’re not good enough too do this without cheating does not mean I have to cheat like you……

Now the following image shows the Manhattan skyline as it used to be before 9/11, in the background looks to be maybe the moon rising and in that there is the image of a distorted face (top left), this image was taken only a year before I started art a the Design & Arts College NZ (2011).

SONY DSC

Now as with what we have too do, this image can be deconstructed, from there you would be able to see how the image was constructed then you should be able to replicate the results yourself.

I used a standard 18-55 SAM Sony lens on my Sony 380, the rest is for you too figure out for yourself.
